Bullers o' Buchan/St. Andrew's/Highland Games

The first weekend spent in Aberdeen was quite a productive one filled with lots of sightseeing. On Friday's our class ends earlier so we like to take advantage of the extra time as much as we can. This past Friday, a group of us went to the Bullers o' Buchan where there were lovely cliffs with a costal view of the North Sea. It was a 40 minute bus ride out of the city of Aberdeen and then a very short walk to the actually cliffs. There were two main paths that you could follow and the views were gorgeous. We saw lots of birds including puffins! Also, a seal and some porpoises. Then we all met back at this college pub called The Bobbin for burgers and beers.

Saturday also started out pretty early and another group of us went to St. Andrew's. About an hour train ride from Aberdeen to the birthplace of Golf itself--also the university of Prince William and Kate Middleton. It was nice to walk around the little town and we got the opportunity to shop as well as explore the university, castle and cathedral ruins, and the golf course.

The main quad area--snuck in behind a tour group

Side street down to the castle ruins

Walking through what used to be the cathedral but now only parts remain along with an expansive cemetary.

 The remains of the cathedral.

Me standing on the "Wee Bridge" This bridge has been around since the beginning of golf. You have to run out onto the course when no one is up to tee off. It was quite comical for our group to accomplish this.
Me touching the grass/course where golf was invented--hehehe Uncle Mike! :P

Fischer and Donaldson is a must stop for their famous fudge donuts!

Sunday was a whole group trip to the Aberdeen Highland Games. Highland games are completed in stages all around Scotland with minor turnaments in different cities. The different events include: single bagpiping, group bagpiping, dancing, caber toss, weight toss, hammer toss, shot put, long jump, dashes, batton twirling, and tug-of-war. The winners either received money, whiskey, or a combination of both depending on the age level. The rest of the field that wasn't the arena was filled with vendors and local stalls selling various items.
